During the early part of the fifties a lot of building
work was going on. Every day an unexploded bomb was found and the
experts were called in.
People would stand and watch the excitement. In
1998 they built a new road in Dartford in Kent. It seemed that every
Friday an unexploded bomb was found, this time the whole of Dartford
was closed off with traffic jams that broke records. How things
have changed....

Quick housing for the people.

One of the biggest problems the government had
to face was the many thousands of homeless. Many areas had been
bombed so badly and many troops returning home created the shortages.
Thousands of temporary pre-fabs were built to house the homeless.
There was still a shortage of food so many people grew their own,
and kept the odd chicken or two. At least there was fresh eggs...
