Britain was in some sought of problems around this
time. The new Prime Minister Harold Macmillan told the people in
July "most of our people have never had it so good". Those that
did not have it that good emigrated to commonwealth countries at
the rate of two thousand a week. Those that stayed saw the spectre
of the Common Market on the horizon.

4th December 88 people died in the train crash
at Lewisham.

My home town in Kent was on the direct rail line
from Lewisham in South London. Our street was in turmoil over the
train crash at Lewisham. Neighbours had loved ones coming back from
London that night. Some from work some from Christmas shopping.
With only two telephones in the whole street (and that was a party
line). Nobody knew what was going on.
